About Our Kegalle Municipal Council
The Kegalle Local Government Institution, which was established as the Local Board in 1895 and as the UCC in 1989, was governed by a board of officers appointed by the government until 1932. The first Executive Board, consisting of representatives elected by popular vote, was appointed in 1933 and since then, the number of chairmen elected by popular vote has been 18. The Kegalle Urban Council was converted into a Municipal Council with effect from 19.03.2023 by the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2296/05 dated 06.09.2022 and is governed by a Municipal Commissioner.
History of the Municipality
The Kegalle Local Government Institution has a rich history, beginning its journey as the Local Board in 1895 before evolving into the Urban Council (UCC) in 1989. Initially governed by a board of officers appointed by the government until 1932, the institution saw a major transformation with the establishment of its first executive board in 1933, comprising representatives elected through popular vote. Since then, 18 chairmen have been elected by the people, reflecting its enduring democratic traditions.
On Tuesday, 6th September 2022, the Kegalle Municipal Council was formally established through an Extraordinary Gazette issued by the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Encompassing an area of 776 hectares, the current jurisdiction of the Kegalle Municipal Council is divided into 12 distinct divisions: Ambanpitiya Urban, Habudugala, Anguruwella, Wewaladeniya, Olagama, Kurunduhinna, Madeiyawa, Meetiyya, Nilmalgoda, Pitihuma, Narangoda, and Rockhill. This establishment marks a significant milestone in the administrative evolution of the region.
